Here at Greenwood Village Veterinary Clinic, we are pleased to offer heartworm testing and parasite prevention for our patients.
Heartworms (or even a single adult heartworm) can cause a lot of damage to an infected dog. Adult heartworms can grow as long as twelve inches when they are full grown. At that point, they live in the heart and lungs which cause a dog to go into heart and lung failure.
The treatment can be just as deadly. When the adult worms are killed, they travel throughout the bloodstream and can cause all kinds of problems. For this reason, dogs who are receiving treatment need to be monitored closely. There are times when a dog may need additional treatment to get rid of all of the heartworms.
It is much easier to test your dog for heartworm and keep him or her on a preventative than to lose your dog to this deadly but easily preventable disease.
The idea of your pet being infested with parasites is a disturbing thought, but it’s also a medical issue that can have serious consequences if not properly dealt with or prevented. Parasites pose a variety of health issues for our pets, who can be very susceptible to certain parasites depending on age, region, and other factors.
At Greenwood Village Veterinary Clinic, we emphasize the importance of preventing parasites. Through preventative measures, you can successfully protect your pet. Pets that are not protected often develop parasites, leading to serious problems for them and their owners.
The cost of prevention is minimal compared to the cost of treatment, which can be expensive and stressful on your pet. Parasites like heartworm can even be fatal, so preventing parasites is of the utmost importance.
